What is your first impression of the exhibit?
My first impression was that the huge photos looked like drawings. the space itself was very engaging because you see the huge photos as soon as you walk in and it made me want to go around the rest of the exhibit to see the rest of the photos.
What is the exhibition about?
The main themes of "New Photography" is love, solidarity, care and memory.
How are the images arranged in the space?
The exhibit was split into 2 rooms with multiple sections. there were images displayed on a moving machine. images displayed on mini beds, portraits aligned on 2 walls and most of the photos were fairly big.
Why do you think they are arranged this way?
They were probably arranged this way because the themes relate to each other.
How do you feel about this?
I was initially very impressed with the photos just based on how they were displayed and the aesthetic. after seeing the "Agony of the New Bed" display I was very sad. the reality that many women and young girls go through with misogyny and arranged marriages is a topic that will always need to be covered.
Choose three images from the exhibition, write a brief bio of the photographer and then talk about why you chose the images.
Lebohang Kganye was born in 1990. she lives and works in Johannesburg. I chose this photo because I love the way it is displayed. Not only are the photos cut out and set up in an interesting way but the shadows look amazing too.
Sheelasha Rajbhandari was born in 1988, and she lives and works in Kathmandu. I chose these photos because her display is unique and something I've never seen before. the message of the display is also very sad but a necessary thing to bring attention to.
Sandra Blow was born in 1990 and she lives and works in Mexico City. I chose this work because i am part of the LGBTQ+ community myself, so these photos feel personal to me.
What was your experience seeing images in this situation?
i found the moving image fragments interesting because even the shadows looked cool. i was inspired by seeing how these different artists display their photos in such unique ways.
Would you recommend this exhibition to someone else? Why, why not?
i would recommend this exhibition because there is a consistent theme of resilient women accompanied by beautiful colors and unique displays.
